Dato’ Halimah Hassan was the Director General Department of Environment from 2011-2015 as in her capacity she was responsible for the enforcement of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 relating to the prevention, abatement, control of pollution and enhancement of the environment and Part IV of the Exclusive Economic Zone Act 1984 relating to marine pollution.
Humans had a close relationship with the environment whereby both depended and had effects on each other, which was why issues must be addressed.
She started her career at the Department of Environment Malaysia in 1981 as an Environmental Control Officer in the Environmental Impact Assessment Unit. Since then, she has worked in different sections of the Department thus gaining experience in various environmental management programmes. This included areas in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Input to Development Planning, Enforcement, New Program Formulation, Environmental Information and Education, and International Affairs.
During her career with the department, she also held position as State Director for Sabah and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, where she gained invaluable ground experience and direct involvement with the industries. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Science and is a Certified Erosion, Sediment and Stormwater Inspector as well as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control.
Since 2012 to date, she holds the position of Vice President of the Malaysian Stormwater Organization and is a Member of the Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia.
